After the Bell: Bears on the Prowl

Bear Jen: After a day of screaming headlines about the jobless rate reaching a 16-year high, the market isn't going to respond kindly. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 144 points today and the newspaper sector didn't come up with a better hand.

Everyone was down that we cover, with the one lone exception: The street bid up McClatchy (NYSE: MNI) a penny to $1.47 on light volume.

Media General (NYSE: MEG) and Journal Communications (NYSE: JRN) were down the most. MEG lost 11.3% or 39 cents closing at $3.06 while JRN shed 10.7% or 28 cents to $2.32.

The Street drove down the value of A.H. Belo (NYSE: AHC) and E.W. Scripps (NYSE: SSP) down 6.4% to $2.48 and 4.2% to $2.04, respectively.

Shares in The New York Times (NYSE: NYT) declined 3.5% to $7.06. Gannett? The company's (NYSE: GCI) stock lost 4 cents closing at $8.59.

LEE was down 5.3% closing at 53 cents.
